Recap Structured Electronic Design

A recap of the course design of application-specific amplifiers with operational amplifiers. A step-by-step approach:

  1. Derive the specifications from the application description:

    1. Functional specifications

    2. Performance specifications

    3. Environmental (operating) conditions

    4. Cost factors

  2. Design of the negative feedback amplifier configuration, based on the way the electrical quantity that at best represents the source signal and the load signal

  3. Find show-stopper values for equivalent input noise sources of the controller:

  4. Design a high-level bias solution and:

    1. Find show-stopper values for the static and dynamic voltage and current drive capability of the controller

    2. Find show-stopper values for equivalent input offset and bias quantities of the controller

    3. Find show-stopper values for (de)coupling capacitances and biasing elements

  5. Find show-stopper values for the gain-bandwith product of the controller and consider possible interaction with input capacitances and output impedance

  6. Search for an operational amplifier that can be used as controller

  7. Make a small-signal model that can be used for the evaluation of the linear dynamic behavior with the aid of the asymptotic gain feedback model:

    1. Voltage gain

    2. Output impedance

  8. Evaluate the frequency stability and if necessary apply frequency compensation

  9. Verify the behavior using LTsipce or SLiCAP with appropriate models

  10. Build it and test it!
